The last 5 days weren't easy for my colleagues and for all the students. It was a hard time for most of them. To some extent, I was a bit affected. It seems that sadness can be contagious.
However, I didn't let myself down and I tried my best till the end.
My class did a catwalk, a singing performance and a dancing performance as well. The dance part was sega which is a traditional dance back in Mauritius, my home island. Moreover, we did 2 short comedies (funny ones!) and ended up with a war dance (slight imitation of the haka).
The aims was to boost self confidence of the students. Something that we chinese people do lack and that probably, these kids really needed since their early teenagehood.
I'm proud of my class and they did great for the farewell party.
Actually, the last 5 days were hard from several point of views. I believe that because of the working hours and poor living conditions, the volunteers were tired rapidly. The fatigue was accumulating over the time. 5 days already and we were still going on...strong but tired.
It was also tough for the kids. They were, on the other hand, happy about the classes because it was definitely not as stressful and painful as normal classes. They had foreigners to teach them new things. They were happy and this could be read on their face. To them, time was flying at an extremely fast speed. Faster than usual.
As the final days were approaching, the kids were feeling sad. Sad because we would be leaving them and wouldn't see them soon. Probably or certainly, never see them again. However, we have internet and with internet, it might be possible to reconnect.
Tears of sadness could be seen on many faces. It was harder for the kids than for the volunteers. That's a fact. Some students even considered us as elder brothers and sisters..."gege" or "jiejie"...
